Since I take a little while to knit things, I decided that even though it is February here and snow everywhere it was time to think of summer!
I was trying to think of things to knit for the summer since I am loving my knitting time, and have found that cotton yarns are quite easy to work with, as long as you don't pull the stitches too tight as they don't have the same give as wool. Keeping that in mind, there are so many cool projects you can create using these summer weight cotton blends and this gorgeous tote/bag would be perfect.
Check out the video to see if you don't get excited! It is also a good time to try out circular needles. Don't be afraid of them, once you get used to them they are awesome to work with. Maybe get some supplies ahead of time such as stitch holders and markers so you don't have to stop your project half way through.
Cotton Beach Tote
Since this is knitted on circular needles there are no pieces to sew together afterwards (always my problem, need to get more experience with that part). You don't have to make it exactly as shown, you can use the same weight cotton yarn in different colors or simply stick to one color if you prefer a solid shade and don't like to fumble with changing colors.
Use as a Market Tote Too!
This doesn't have to be just for the beach, it could be for those Saturday Garden Markets for fresh fruit and veggies, or for whatever you need. You could also like it if you wish and use as a purse. Either way I thought this not only looks good but is an awesome project to show off your knitting in the summer months.
If you love the idea of totes, or bags, check out one of my first projects, which was a knitting bag, that I created with knitted strips.
You can get Red Heart yarn products online at Amazon many times in bulk. This is the main color she uses in the video. I plan I making mine this solid color so will purchase the same total amount in one color. I personally am not quite ready for the changing of colors. I also thought this would look good in a yellow for the summer, just thinking out loud!
I like the Bamboo needles they are a nice change from the metal, plus they are perfect for cotton knitting. Make sure you get circular needles with 24 inches as this is where your tote will be hanging from and you don't want to be crowded.
Circular knitting needles take a little getting used to, as at first it feels like the work is falling off but it is not and you will find your knitting more flexible than regular needles.
You can Wash and Wash Cotton Yarn
The beauty of using 100% cotton is that it is not only durable, but easy to wash, but DON'T put it in the dryer, lay it flat somewhere to dry if possible. I would carry some plastic bags in it for wet things if possible, but totally enjoy creating a knitted tote/beach bag that you can show off this summer.
My name is Diane and I love all arts and crafts including painting, drawing and knitting (I painted the bee above!) I decided after many years to take up knitting again and needed simple patterns that I could do while watching TV or listening to music that would help dial down stress. I hope you enjoy some of my own projects as well as ones I have found.
